wordsmithin': coquette‏

Extra! Extra! Read all about it HERE.

co·quette n.
A woman who makes teasing sexual or romantic overtures; a flirt.

I first heard this word when listening to “East of Eden” on audio CD while commuting to work.

“She was very pretty and she made coquettish little jokes” was the line specifically.

What initially caught my eye (read: ear) was that it sounded like Steinbeck was describing Abra as being a cokehead.

I thought, “that doesn’t seem likely.”

So the good news is that you can call someone a coquette and they will likely think you meant that they are merely a cokehead.

The bad news is that I’m not sure which one of those would be deemed more or less offensive anymore in our culture.
