day no. 16,536: the best heirloom

Psalm 16:5-6
The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

The best gift our ancestors ever prepared for our generation was keeping the covenant within their own. The love of the Lord is the best heirloom. He keeps households in tact and marks off the times and places of their habitations for His glory and their good. Those born under the covenant call themselves blessed and thank God for the privileges provided to them by it.

day no. 16,535: take heart. give courage. get to work.

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing.

Take heart.
Give courage.
Get to work.

In faith, inspire courageous boldness in one another and get to building.

Edify.
Construct.
Build up.

Work by His Spirit and according to His blueprints.

2 Thessalonians 3:13
But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

And whatever you do, don't give up.

day no. 16,534: engaging, not assuaging

The church should be engaging culture, not assuaging it. That is to say, it should be dictating to the world the commands of its King instead of listening to the world’s demands. The church needs to learn what others already know: you never negotiate with terrorists

Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The church does not need to be more responsive to the world; it needs to take more initiative toward it. We are the teachers, not the students. We shouldn't be taking notes from the world on how to win their respect. We should be delivering summons to the world demanding that they stand down and pay their respects to Christ before it's too late.

James 4:4
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
enmity

The world hates us and we should fight back by loving it. We do not love the world by loving what it loves. A father who withholds discipline hates his child and a church that withholds correction hates the world. If the church is to love the world, it must begin by instructing it, not earning degrees from it. The approval of God in Christ should be taught instead of the approval of the world being sought.

day no. 16,533: packed full and overflowing

Proverbs 24:3-4
Through wisdom is an house builded;
And by understanding it is established:
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

A wise house is a full house. It is jam packed. Its calendars, rooms, lives, and hearts and are full. Everywhere the wise go and whatever they do, they find God filling it up to overflowing, more grace than can be gathered up.

John 1:16
And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

The good life of grace by faith in Christ alone is grace-packed the way that summer movies are action-packed.

day no. 16,532: apostolic parenting

Paul provides a preview of Christian parenting and it’s results in his letter to the saints at Thessalonica. As converts to the Christian faith, they did not have Christian parents so the apostle had to play both roles. They were the first generation of believers, but were given an example in the Apostle Paul of how to raise the next generation to believe.

1 Thessalonians 2:7
But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.

Children need to be nourished and cherished. They need someone to gently be with and for them. They must be nursed on pure, spiritual milk so that they might grow up to consume spiritual meat. They need their meat cut up for them in the meantime and the love of a mother gladly assumes that responsibility.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

Fathers provide the means that provide the nourishment. They bring home the goods that mothers turn into good meals. But fathers do not merely play support to the mother's role. They lead in breathing courage into their children. They rally the troops and given the charge that inspires young hearts to rise up and follow. Fathers set and enforce the standards. They provide consistent discipline through their constant vigilance.

1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

The goal is not merely that the child would honor and respect their father and mother, but that they would honor and respect their Father in heaven by honoring and respecting the earthly father and mother that God gave to them. The goal isn't merely to follow the standard, but to love it. The aim is not simply conformity in conduct, but purity in belief.

1 Thessalonians 4:8
He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

As a result, if a child rejects the counsel of his or her Christian parents, the child is not just rejecting his or her parents, but is found to be rejecting God. Parents are ambassadors for Jesus deployed by the Father. Parents are like private missionaries sent on behalf of the King to His tiniest subjects.

1 Thessalonians 4:1
Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

Parents, like Christ, are easily pleased and impossible to satisfy. A father delights over his toddler's first mumbled words, but would be hard pressed to be content with the inarticulate ramblings of his teenager. A mother might rejoice over her daughter's first attempts at steps, but would not be satisfied if she walked that way down the aisle. Because God loves us, He cannot be content with out immaturity; but because He loves us, He is always cheering for us right where we are.

1 Thessalonians 4:10
And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more.

The result of Christian parenting is Christian children. And just as the Father calls us ever onward and upward, to Narnia and the North, so a parent never stops wanting what's best for their child. They never cease hoping for more and more.

In summary, all Christians are children of God. Those to whom God gives children should expect Christian parenting to do for their children what God has already done for them. We see this played out in the Apostle Paul's parenting of the Thessalonians and trust that it was paid forward in their parenting of the children God gave them.

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
Study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

By covenant, we keep those within and gain some from without and in due time conquer the world for Christ and kingdom, King and Christendom.

day no. 16,531: Christian work

"The only Christian work is good work well done. Let the Church see to it that the workers are Christian people and do their work well, as to God: then all the work will be Christian work, whether it is church embroidery, or sewage farming." — Dorothy Sayers, Why Work

Christian work is defined by the direct object and the adverb.

It is Christian to hate. In fact, hate is a good work that Christians are required to engage in. Christians are commanded to hate evil. That is a good work prepared beforehand that we should walk in it.

It is Christian to love. It is required. Unless, of course, it is the love of money. That is forbidden. A Christian cannot love lucre for that is the root of all kinds of other evils. So, the direct object defines if the nature of the verb as Christian.

It can be Christian to hate and Christian to love depending on what you hate or love. You cannot hate God or love wickedness. That is not Christian. But you cannot NOT love God or hate sin. That is required and Christianity 101.

It is Christian to give cheerily, forgive immediately, obey thoroughly, plan faithfully, wait hopefully, etc... God does not merely command the what, but the how. He says what to do (verb) and to what to do it (direct object), but He also instructs for whom it should be done (indirect object) and how it should be done (adverb). In other words, God is involved in all the words. God controls all the parts of speech. God is in the grammar. He directs the subject to act in a particular way to a particular end for particular people.

God commands to our weakness and for the benefit of others. That means He tells us to do things we were not going to do without being told. He tells us a way of doing them we weren't going to employ. It also means our neighbor really needs us to do these things in His way for them. Others are ministered to through our obedience to Christ's verbs and adverbs.

There is a Christian way (adverb) to do any lawful work. Christian work is not simply work that only Christians can do (evangelism, ministry, preaching, etc...), but all good work done with a Christ-like spirit. Of course, we must engage in the uniquely Christian vocations of evangelism and Christian education, etc... but we must not neglect to drive to work in a Christian way and pay our bills like ones who worship the Lord.

day no. 16,530: lost in translation

"A man thinks that by mouthing hard words he understands hard things."  Herman Melville

You can win a spelling bee and fail a philosophy final. It is easy to assume that an ability to pronounce large words translates into an understanding of large concepts, but it doesn't. A parrot can be taught to say, "Amen," but cannot be trusted to make intercession. A clever child might say, "red light," but should not, therefore, be permitted to drive. Just because the kid can count to ten doesn't mean you should let them do your taxes.

"If you say, 'The social utility of the indeterminate sentence is recognized by all criminologists as a part of our sociological evolution towards a more humane and scientific view of punishment,' you can go on talking like that for hours with hardly a movement of the gray matter inside your skull. But if you begin, 'I wish Jones to go to gaol and Brown to say when Jones shall come out,' you will discover, with a thrill of horror, that you are obliged to think. The long words are not the hard words, it is the short words that are hard. There is much more metaphysical subtlety in the word 'damn' than in the word 'degeneration.'"  G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

Large words sometimes require the least amount of intellect. They may take a bit of skill to pronounce, but it does not require any sentience to pronounce them as law. Legalese may the jargon of the jurisdiction, but it doesn't require any sense of justice to repeat it.

day no. 16,529: descendants in the ascendant (a.k.a. keeping the party alive)

Isaiah 61:4-6
And they shall rebuild the old ruins, They shall raise up the former desolations, And they shall repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, And the sons of the foreigner shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. But you shall be named the priests of the LORD, They shall call you the servants of our God. You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, And in their glory you shall boast.

Every generation is a fruit and a seed. It is the product of the seeds sown before it and it contains the seeds of what comes next. Generations of neglect can add up, but it cannot negate the seed. It can sow itself to the wind, but it can't keep from being seed.

Isaiah 61:9
And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.

Generations flood the nations and the regenerate are a germination. Desolate grounds can be turned around. As a generation dies to itself and like wheat falls to the ground, it gives way to seeds which begin to change the entire landscape.

Isaiah 65:23
They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

The hard work of good works will be rewarded. Just as God's Word will not come back void, so good works done in the Lord will not go down without coming back thirty, sixty, or even hundredfold.

Isaiah 66:22
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

A man whose name is in the Lamb's Book of Life will care about his namesake in the Lamb's Land of the Living. Our seeds contain seeds. Our children contain our grandchildren. Nations are living in your loins. Generations are sleeping across the hall. So, let us sow in hope what we have reaped in receiving and keep the party alive forever.

day no. 16,528: servant lordship > servant leadership

Genesis 2:18
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Servant Leadership (registered trademark) calls the man to be his wife's helper. He is a "real man," in other words, only when he isn't.

Servant Lordship calls the man to be his wife's head. He is a "real man" only when he acts like one.

God gave man a mission and a mate, but He did not give the man the option to make her his mission. He can pursue her as a side story, but not as the main plot.

1 Corinthians 11:3
I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

A husband is the head of his house. This is inescapable. It is an inexorable fact. The only question is: is he a good head of his house or a bad one? Is he leading well or not so well? But either way, he will lead. He has not been given any choice in that matter. If he abdicates, his failure leads. If he abandons the post, his abandonment dominates what's left. An empty chair at the dinner table carries all the weight. A man's absence is always present.

Genesis 2:21-22
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Man was made from the earth and for the earth.
Woman was made from man and for the man.

1 Corinthians 11:7-9
[The man] is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

Man is the glory of God. Woman is the glory of man. So, woman is the glory of the glory of God and man is the head that the Head has chosen.

John 13:13-17
You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Christ did not cease being their Lord or Teacher when He stooped to serve them. His service was magnified by the very fact that He WAS their Lord and Teacher. If He had forfeited His office of Master in order to serve, He would have been just another servant serving. Christ provided an example, however, of being a Master and a Servant simultaneously. Men are called to follow this example. If you know this, do this. Christ commanded His disciples to obey His example: Servant Lordship. He did not give up the right to lead by giving up his outer garments to serve.

Just as meekness is strength under authority, service is leadership in the midst. You cannot be meek if you are not strong. If you merely under authority, you are not necessarily meek. The weak are under authority, but they have no say in the matter. It is not to their credit. Similarly, you cannot be a servant leader without leading. If you are serving, you are not necessarily leading out. You might even be the first to serve, but that doesn't make you a master. Servants must serve, but they have no say in the matter. It is not to their credit if they do. They aren't stooping, they are doing their duty.

Men were made to be lords. They do not serve women by forfeiting their lordship, but they love them well by retaining their lordliness while serving them.

day no. 16,527: it depends who you ask

Amos 5:4-5
For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live: But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

Q: Is it okay to ask for help?
A: It depends who you ask.

Some say that asking for help is already a failure.
Some say that asking for help is already a victory.

But it really depends on who you ask for help. It is always a sin to ask an idol for help. It is a sin to trust them to assist you. The plea can be for better crops or to see more crop tops, but if it is made to an idol, it is sin, regardless of the content of the request. To ask noble things of ignobility is to betray both logic and the Lord.

God says, "Don't look to idols for help, look to Me."

Isaiah 45:22
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

It is paramount that we look to God for help and that we look to Him for the kind of help we need. If we bring to Him wicked requests, we will find danger, not deliverance. If we look somewhere else for righteousness, we will find disappointment, not redemption. But if we look to Him for what we need, He will withhold no good thing from those who look to Him. Those who ask Him rightly receive. Those who knock rightly at the right Door are welcomed (John 10:9). Those who seek the right things the right way find them.

day no. 16,526: whatever will not serve Him

Isaiah 60:12
The nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.

There is one King and one kingdom.
Christ and Christendom are indomitable.

Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess His rightful claim to their obedience. Every nation and generation that gladly submits to Him will be assimilated into His Kingdom and any who resist or revolt will be wasted. Sin will have no trophies on the new earth. All disobedience will be done with. No remnant of unrighteousness will survive. Whatever will not submit to Christ will cease. Whatever does not begin with Him... will end.

Saturday, January 20, 2024

day no. 16,525: God does not abandon His children's children

Isaiah 59:21
As for me, this is My covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and My words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.

God places praise in the mouths of parents and their posterity. He does not abandon the children of His children. Where He plants, He provides growth. Where He produces fruit, He creates seeds.

The Lord loves legacy. He enjoys His children's children. He is not a disinterested grandparent living His best retired life now. He likes giving good things to His Son's sons and promises His covenant children that the good only gets better. The Good News has just begun and it's only getting louder.

day no. 16,524: gardenize the globe for the glory of God

Isaiah 58:11-12
And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

God goes with us as we cultivate the earth. He has given us our marching orders: rule and subdue -- gardenize the globe for the glory of God and the good of your neighbor. Take the pattern of Genesis 1 and 2 and impose it upon the wildness outside the garden. Use Eden as your template and expand its influence.

You are filled up as you pour out. You bless your descendants as you honor your ancestors. You pass along as of first importance what you also received -- that Christ was crucified for our sins according to the Scripture, that He was dead and buried, and rose on the third day according to the Scriptures and appeared to many for a period of forty days before ascending to the right hand of the Father to sit down crowned King of kings and Lord of lords.

So, lay the foundations that your grandchildren will build upon.
Plant crops you will not harvest.
Sow seeds you won't see grow.
Build a world you will never see.

2 Corinthians 3:17b-18
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Praise God for the high privilege of being laid low so that our descendants might ascend all the more to greater glories.

day no. 16,523: expect trouble, expect help

"Expect trouble, therefore, Christian, when thou lookest beneath thee. Then look around thee. Where art thou? Thou art in an enemy's country, a stranger and a sojourner. The world is not thy friend. If it be, then thou art not God's friend, for he who is the friend of the world is the enemy of God. Be assured that thou shalt find foe-men everywhere. When thou sleepest, think that thou art resting on the battlefield; when thou walkest, suspect an ambush in every hedge... Expect trouble then, but despond not on account of it, for God is with thee to help and to strengthen thee. He hath said, 'I will be with thee in trouble; I will deliver thee and honour thee.'" — Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Morning and Evening

Christian, expect trouble, but expect help.

John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

You are a Christian.
Trouble will come.

Matthew 28:20
I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

You are a Christian.
Help will come.

day no. 16,522: like the smell of warm bread

Psalm 12:7-8
You shall keep them, O Lord,
You shall preserve them from this generation forever.
The wicked prowl on every side,
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

A spotlight shining into the darkness can feel pretty isolated and a candle in a cave can feel rather conspicuous, but God has promised to preserve the light. Though the darkness surrounds, it cannot suffocate. It can feel like the gates of light shall not prevail against the onslaught of darkness, but the promise runs in the other direction (Mt 16:18). It is not the darkness crowding in on the light, it is the light pushing out the darkness. The contact points grow in number as the circumference of light grows, but the contact points are growing thinner. The center of light is increasing in glory and washing over the landscape like the smell of warm bread through a house. Though the wicked prowl on every side, their side is weakening. Though vileness be lifted up among the enemies of God, it is being struck down by the friends of God.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

day no. 16,521: the land and the Lord

Isaiah 57:13
He that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.

The meek shall inherit the mountains. The land is not merely an empty wine bottle. It isn't simply discarded after being consumed. It isn't the leftover husk after all the good stuff has been plucked out. The land is the wine. It flows with milk and honey. It contains buried treasures. It is where we build our homes and watch our children learn how to walk. It is where we grow our food and watch our livestock birth theirs. The land is not the et cetera. It is not merely along for the ride. It is not simply the stage on which the important things take place. It is not merely the means, but the end. It is not just the piano, it is the music.

And those who put their trust in the Maker of the land will have it. They will inherit the earth and the ethereal. They will possess the land and the Lord. He will be their God and they will be His people. This will be their land and He will be their mountain.

Psalm 95:2-7
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is His also. The sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

Monday, January 15, 2024

day no. 16,520: covenants keep

Leviticus 26:7-9
And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.

The covenant of Christ keeps.

Covenant keeps its enemies on the run. No one can stand before God except in Christ and anyone in Christ can stand before anyone else. If you can stand in the throne room of God, you need not bow anywhere else. If you can approach Him, you need not run from anyone else.

Covenant keeps on coming. It does not expire. It does not run its course or get exhausted. It continues. It produces more. It grows and expands. It increases circumference as it grows in diameter. It increases contact with the outside world like a spotlight growing in circumference increases its contact with the darkness. The number of contact points grow as the light does. This is a sure sign of the end of night, not the beginning of dusk.

Covenant keeps count. It multiplies. It knows its own and does not lose them. It keeps close watch over those it promises to tend to. It does not make anything it does not care for. It does not fear scarcity, but trusts in charity. It does not withhold, it gives hilariously.

Covenant keeps one from being held captive. It is free. It overflows. It spills over and floods the land. It immerses everything until it is all baptized under One Name. It establishes and expands its influence and presence. It does not go gently into that night, but rages against it. The night cannot prevail against high noon. The sun is up. The days are growing longer.

day no. 16,519: love barks

Isaiah 56:10
His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

What good is a watch dog that doesn't watch? Or even worse, one that watches, but can't bark to save its life when it does see something?

Christians need to have their heads on a swivel. They need to be situationally aware with eyes in their heads to see what's going on.

1 Chronicles 12:32
And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.

Not only should Christians see what's up and know what to do about it, but they should also have the ability to bark about what they see. A mute dog who can see the danger approaching is not a good watch dog. He might mean well, but he can't guard well. And if he cannot guard, he is a failure as far as a watchdog goes. He cannot save those he loves by wishing them well.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14
Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.

Men are on guard.
Men keep watch.

They stand firm by grace through faith.
They act like men by being strong.
They retain their bark and their bite.

They know how to howl when they see trouble and they know what to do about it if their yells don't chase it away.

Love stands between the danger the beloved.

Love barks.
Love bites.

Let us stand fast in what is right and prepare ourselves for trial.
Let us neither be dogs that do not bark, nor silent onlookers,
nor paid servants who run away before the wolf.
Instead, where the battle rages, let us find ourselves.
Run towards the roar of the lion!
Run towards the roar of battle!
That is where Christ's most glorious victories shall be won!
— St. Boniface

The household of faith needs watch dogs with marks backed up by bite.

day no. 16,518: the separation of merch and state

"Properly understood, the case for capitalism is not a case for license or for laissez faire. It is a case for national wealth as a moral good; for the interest of the mass of consumers as the guide of policy; for clear and uniform rules of competition imposed upon all; for letting markets set prices, letting buyers make choices, and letting producers experiment, innovate, and make what they think they can sell -- all while protecting consumers and punishing abuses. It is a case for avoiding concentrations of power, for keeping business and government separate, and for letting those who can meet their own needs do so. It is a case for humility about our ability to know, and therefore about our capacity to do."  Yuval Levin

The marriage of the market and the ministry of the State is Crapitalism at its very finest.

"Each of the moral aspirations we hope for about our society, and each of the economic objectives we have in a free enterprise economy, are undermined by an overly cozy relationship with business and government, where the collective power of the state is allowed to pick winners and losers. Our case for a market economy is a noble one, but it is undermined from start to finish when we fail to condemn the insidious effects of crony capitalism."  David Bahnsen, There's No Free Lunch

Crony capitalism is Crapitalism.

Liberty demands a separation of Merch and State. The separation of Church and State is often touted as the sole safeguard of civil liberties, but it typically is promoted by those looking to separate the Church from its existence. Liberty does not command the State to be allergic to the Church. It does demand sphere sovereignty, but not sphere segregation. The far greater threat to liberty is the fusion of Merch and State. When the State artificially inflates the odds of a particular industry or referees through regulation the game to the benefit of one of the participants, the only result is richer refs and poorer hoi polloi.

2 Peter 2:19
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

The Marketplace cannot deliver liberty. It does not possess it. It can and does promise it, but it cannot deliver it to you, even if you pay for the upgraded shipping. It can advertise it, but it cannot produce it. It can sell you on the idea, but it cannot manufacture it.

And the more the Market gets in bed with the Ministry of the State, the less liberty anyone has. Neither has freedom to offer. They are servants. Money and the Magistrate make for terrible masters. The servants of corruption cannot confer purity. The slaves of sin cannot successfully sell salvation. They have none to give. They can only invent counterfeit hells to save you from. They can manufacture an artificial damnation in order to advertise a synthetic salvation, but they cannot deliver the real thing. Lucre and the Lawmakers make for wonderful servants when they serve the Lord, their God and Maker, but apart from Him, they are merely tinpot paladins and milquetoast messiahs.

day no. 16,517: victims of the great omission

Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

When we omit our children from our mission, we leave them vulnerable to the missions of others. Someone will want our children if we don't. Someone will teach them and be there for them if we're too busy teaching or being there for others. If we make someone else's kids our target, our kids will be the targets of someone else. If we set our sights on other people's children, other people will set their sights on ours.

For what does it profit a man if should reach the nations, but lose his own son?

God has promised to be ever present in our parenting. As we disciple our children through the instruction and nourishment of the Lord, we immerse them into all things Triune. We flood their worlds with His goodness until it is all under His influence. We teach them everything He has commanded and show them how to obey it. We show them now to obey by teaching them to obey, just as Christ commanded us to do. And as we do all of this, we know it is not in vain, for He is with us and will never leave us or our children. World without end. Amen.

Isaiah 54:13
All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
And great shall be the peace of your children.

The Lord will lead the Sunday Schools of the saints. He will first use the parents He has saved to convey the covenant to their respective little flocks. He will then use the local congregation of which the family belongs to teach their children about His communion. And He will, Himself, play Counselor to your kids. He will teach them His ways as He inhabits their souls. He will be present in the teaching of the parents and in the hearts of the children in order to unite the hearing with believing. He will be present in the entire process: from calling the parent, to providing the instruction, to preparing the heart to receive the wisdom.

day no. 16,516: our descendants and the desolate cities

Isaiah 54:2-3
Enlarge the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;
Do not spare;
Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes.
For you shall expand to the right and to the left,
And your descendants will inherit the nations,
And make the desolate cities inhabited.

You cannot outpace grace. You cannot anticipate more than God is ready to provide. You cannot imagine more goodness than He possesses. You are unable to aspire higher than He can ascend.

Ephesians 3:20-21
Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Do not hold back on Him. Do not withhold from Him your hopes. He does not withhold any good thing from those who love Him.

Psalm 84:11
For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

Look to the left: goodness;
look to your right: goodness.

Like Abraham surveying the land, look out and see what your children will call home. Look at the wildness that needs domestication. Look at the out of control that needs order. Look at the common grace in need of husbandry. And then go out there and get to work: domesticate, impose order, shepherd toward maturity in Christ.

In short, rule and subdue the earth for the glory of God and the good of your neighbor. The globe needs to be gardenized and the nations need to be discipled. The meek will inherit the whole shebang and the more we work whatever kinks out that are directly in front of us, the less kinks our grandchildren will inherit in need of working out. The more we shoulder our weight, the more we free up generations to shoulder new ones. By rising up to our adventure, we enable our grandchildren to tackle brand spanking new ones.

day no. 16,515: at our twelve and on our six

Isaiah 52:12
For you shall not go out with haste, Nor go by flight; For the LORD will go before you, And the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

God is the reason and the rallying point. He goes before and watches your behind. He is the target and the twang of the arrow. He is in the vision and vanguard that guides and in the mission and marching that follows. He is the goal and the gumption. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the be all and end all. When you roll with God, He clears the way and keeps you going. He is at our twelve and on our six. He is never in a panic. We need never worry about what is next or what is behind. In Christ, the striving and the scrapping sleep well.

Philippians 3:12-14
I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

day no. 16,514: vain jangling

1 Timothy 1:5-6
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: from which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling.

Those who aim at another end miss. Those who aim at this end another way miss. It is vain to aim anywhere else. It is vain to set your sights another way.

Vain, vain, vain.... jangling fool.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Anything outside of Christ is vain jangling.

Satan speaks angel.

You can be extravagantly, outlandishly wrong.

The devil convinced a third of the angels to give their bodies to the flames, but all for nothing.

Whatever you do without love misses the mark.
Wherever you end up if not at love ends poorly.

day no. 16,513: where straight and white become bent and benighted

Ecclesiastes 10:18
Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks.

Roofs only appear to cave in all of a sudden. They typically collapse little by little until at the point of crescendo they appear to fall down in a moment. In other words, cave ins have been caving for a long time and the denouement happens all at once only after years of rot and inattention.

Hebrews 2:1
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

Drift is easy. Anyone can do it!!!

“A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.” — G.K. Chesterton

It takes great pains to pay attention. It requires effort to remain unchanged. A white fence must constantly be attended to and cared for if it is to remain a white fence. Without attention, the elements will have their way with it and what was once straight and white will be crooked and grey. That about sums up what we're seeing everywhere: straight and white becoming bent and benighted.

“Any organization not explicitly and constitutionally right-wing will sooner or later become left-wing.”  Robert Conquest

Anything which is not aggressively, explicitly, unapologetically orthodox is already on its way to becoming openly, defiantly, and unapologetically unorthodox. To refuse identify as devout is telltale sign of unfaithfulness. It is its own kind and genus of waywardness that paves the way for the gaudy kind of wickedness anyone can see when it eventually arrives at the library with Halloween hair and a ball gown. It is a seed of straying that blooms into the fruit of fruitiness. To be squishy on hard facts is to be lame in approach which grows up into gay in conduct.

day no. 16,512: cut down the proud

Isaiah 51:9
Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

This is the way.

Always has been, always will be.

Awake, O warrior, and clothe yourself in strength. Come to the aid of the captive and set her free. Cut down the proud and slay the sly. Rise up and put the proud down.

This is the constant backdrop behind every story, the soundtrack playing behind every scene:

“Kill the Dragon; Get the Girl."

The cry of the captive has always been, "Save me!" and the cry of the knight has always been, "Here I am. Send me."

The dragon is always a threat to the people and the knight is always a threat to the dragon. For every firebreather, God raises up a firefighter. For every proud serpent, God provides a slayer.

Psalm 118:11
They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the LORD I cut them off!

The reign of the tyrants evaporates when the Son comes out.

day no. 16,511: these too shall pass, but He never will

Isaiah 51:12-13
I, even I, am He that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the Lord thy Maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

Who are we to fear those on whom God has openly declared war? Who are we to cower before those whom God commands to kneel? Why should we worry about the plans of those who God promises to thwart? Who are we to comply to the demands of tyrants for whom God promises destruction? Who are we to fear the fury of the feral for whom God reserves His hellfire?

Do not forget your God.
Do not dwell on your oppressors.

They too shall pass,
but He never will.

day no. 16,510: brand new ol' fashioned legionnaires'

"Two-spirit" might be a new term, but it’s merely good ol’ fashioned demon possession. Where one Spirit is not enough, two will never satisfy. Hence that ever present plus sign.

Matthew 8:16
That evening they brought to Him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.

The presence of spirits plural is merely the philosophy of pluralism incarnate. Where one devil is permitted, more will follow suit. Legions lay in wait for those with open door policies. "Two-spirit" is just brand new ol' fashioned legionnaires'.

Matthew 12:43-45
When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, “I will return to my house from which I came.” And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.

A generation obsessed with cleaning house has opened itself up to possession by leaving the place vacant. Nature despises a vacuum and so does super-nature. If you do not have the Spirit of God in your home, you will have wicked spirits. There is either the one, true Spirit or an endless increase of demonic spirits.

day no. 16,509: Christ contends for Christians

Isaiah 49:24-25
Can the prey be taken from a mighty man, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? Indeed, this is what the Lord says: “Even the captives of the mighty man will be taken away, And the prey of a tyrant will be rescued; For I will contend with the one who contends with you, And I will save your sons.”

Mighty men have a Maker Almighty and tyrants have a Sovereign King. They may be stronger than the majority of men, but never than the solitary God. They may be able to captivate the masses, but never the one, true Lord. He is above their shells and above their spells. They cannot wound His authority or entice His vanity. He is not vulnerable to their attacks or their flattery. He cannot be contended with and the ones who contend with us have to contend with Him.

Psalm 2:2-4
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

Even if all the dictators set aside their in-fighting for a moment to take aim at their common enemy, Christ would have nothing to fear. In fact, not only would He not be afraid, He would laugh. All evil could coalesce and still not cause God to flinch. It would only get Him to guffaw. The gumption of governments are their gaffes. They can no more make a law than they can make a turtle. They can no more impose upon Christ than they can impose upon an eclipse.

And none of this is impersonal. Christ contends for Christians. He takes their persecution personally.

Acts 9:4-5
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" And he said, "Who art thou, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks."

If mess with the Christian, you get the Christ. If you stir up the disciple, you get the Deity. God looks out for His family. He serves, provides, and protects. He looks out for His sons and His sons's sons. Those who mess with the bull gets his horns. Those who mock at followers get their Father.

day no. 16,508: never ending story

Isaiah 44:3-5
For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. One shall say, I am the Lord's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

God converts the parched into patriarchs. The thirsty become springs and the fallow become forests. The offspring of the redeemed are watered by the springs of the Lord. The seeds of the saved are sown in fertile soil. The children of the children of God will call themselves blessed as they call themselves by His Name. They will call out to Christ while calling themselves Christ's people. The blessing of the Lord will call themselves blessed by calling upon the Blessed.

God likes this story and plants its plot over and over again. It is the never ending story and story always wins.
