day no. 14,372: flattery

Psalm 36
The wicked flatter themselves. Flattery is saying things that are untrue or saying true things in an excessive way in order to persuade or gain favor. So the wicked either convince themselves of their goodness by complimenting themselves in ways that aren't true or by congratulating themselves excessively over things they've actually done.

The righteous cannot flatter God. No matter how hard they try, they cannot say enough good things about Him. There are always new mercies to applaud. And the old mercies cannot be overstated. You cannot flatter God. He is beyond your ability to praise too much. The righteous delight in throwing their backs into praising Him as much as they can knowing it cannot ever be condemned as too much.
