day no. 15,016: homiletical help, week 1: the work of words

Homiletics is the art of preaching and sermon writing.

As the men charged with this work on behalf of those who belong to Anthem Church and Salt Columbia, I thought it might be a good exercise to begin sending out a weekly area of focus to understand and employ, to ponder and put intro practice for the sermons you are currently working on and carry with you as an integrated part of your regular sermon preparation and execution.

TODAY: the work of words

1 Timothy 5:17
Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

Those who preach and teach are doing the work of words. It is labor. "Labor" is literally hard, strenuous, depleting toil (see below)

We should be working hard, exhausting ourselves in our sermon preparation and execution. It is good, hard work.

And the good news? We are not alone in our hard work. The other place this exact word from 1 Timothy 5:17 is used is in Matthew 11:28 where Jesus says...

"Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

So let's work hard in our work of words and rest well under the yoke of Jesus as we plow ahead.
