day no. 14,162: building a bigger middle finger

Genesis 11:4
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
The foundation of Babel was laid by hearts determined to do anything other than what God had clearly said. The tremendous effort and determination to build Babel began as a simple, yet seditious sin: I want to avoid what God wants for me. Their hearts flicked God off and their hands cussed His Name with every brick they laid. Discontent that God hadn't given them a long enough middle finger, Babel was erected to reach all the way up to Heaven.

  1. That is such great imagery - that is exactly what the tower must've literally and figuratively looked like to God. And they were making themselves both figuratively and literally higher than God ever intended - pride is essentially always a middle finger, isn't it?
