“Horrible nations have horrible religions.” — C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
You become like what you worship, for better or for worse.
Psalm 135:15-18
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see;
they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.
Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.
If you worship a sand demon, you will be gritty and gross like your god.
If you worship a plethora of monsters, you will be monstrous.
But enough about Islam and Hinduism.
By the grace of God, this principle works in the other direction as well, however.
2 Corinthians 3:18
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
If you worship the one, true God, you will become like His one and only-begotten Son. You will be conformed to the image of Christ and confirmed as a child of God.
Horrible people invent horrible gods and horrible idols inspire horrible things from horrible people. It is a viscous cycle, but it is not beyond hope.
1 John 3:8
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The demons do not have the run of the place and their cut-rate religions will go down to the lake of fire along with them in the end. The nations will be baptized and all the crud will be washed down the drain.
Maranatha!
