day no. 17,190: boredom and dumber

“The unpardonable sin is being bored.” — G.K. Chesterton

If you are not caught up in story grip by the world that God has written around you and the life He has given you to work out within it, then you are aggressively ungrateful and/or enthusiastically lazy.

“To be bored in this world is to be boring in this world.” — Gordon Wilson, The Riot and the Dance

No best selling author has ever been a better world builder than God and yet millions spend endless hours reading their books and watching the movies based on their books. This, on its own, is not problematic. God has made a world in which the characters have the ability and creativity to invent other worlds like Narnia or Middle Earth. So far, so soooo good. But if you look up from the page or away from the screen and all you see are flat characters and boring story arcs, you aren't paying enough attention or you are intentionally ignoring the plot.

"There are no uninteresting things, only uninterested people." — G.K. Chesterton

If the internet has taught us anything, it is that there is a fan page for just about anything you could imagine someone being interested in. That is because anything can be interesting. An idol can be made of anything. And if it can be worshiped, it can be appreciated. It does not need to be sinfully admired in order to appreciate it as a piece of the set design.

"It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.” ― G.K. Chesterton

You will never have the same capacity for appreciation as God the Father, but you don't have to have to exercise the same ingratitude as your fellow man. Take interest and be interesting. Be a better character on the stage God has provided and enjoy all the characters He has placed around you. Listen to the soundtrack and enjoy the set design. To be bored here to be boring and there are few things more sinful than calling the creativity of God a yawn.

We need more gratitude. We need greatertude. Boredom is a bored and its dumb. It's boredumb.
