day no. 14,650: piecemealing

Mark 10:28
Behold, we have left everything and followed You.

We have been taught, and rightly so, that we cannot approach God in a spirit of buffet-style consumerism. In other words, we cannot come picking and choosing what we would like more of and what we don't want at all. God cannot be piecemealed. It is an all or nothing proposition and if you have Him, you have ALL of Him and if you reject any part of Him, you reject ALL of Him.

But the same can be said in the other direction. We cannot offer ourselves buffet-style to God. We cannot set out the parts of ourselves we are willing to make available to God to choose from and withhold the parts of our lives we want to save. Have we left everything and made everything available to God or are we deliberately withholding our choicest delicacies?

The admonition to renounce piecemeal buffet-style Christianity works in both directions. You cannot embrace what you like about God while dismissing the sides you don't like and you cannot surrender what you wish to God while holding back the parts with which you cannot bear to part.
