“Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.” — C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew (The Chronicles of Narnia, #6)
Those who practice willful ignorance eventually get pretty good at it. Their feigned ignorance eventually metastasizes into the real thing. Few people fail at making themselves stupid. Their hard work is rewarded with retarding themselves.
Romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
You can get so used to suppressing the truth that you come to believe in your own lies. You can refuse to see something for so long that you actually become blind to it. It is now invisible to you. It is hidden from your sight; not because it is hiding or because it isn't really there, but because you are now blind to what is right in front of you.
Romans 1:19-20
What may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
Willful ignorance is without excuse. It refuses to know what it knows and God holds it responsible for forgetting.
