Proverbs 22:29
Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
"If you want the secondary greatness of recognized talent, focus first on the primary greatness of character." - Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
It is not hard to imagine why so many want to stand before kings, but it is hard to imagine many putting in the hard work to become good enough at anything in order to warrant such a meeting.
Character cannot be crafted in a moment of panic.
Panic reveals character. It produces an opportunity for the existing character to come out. Character is crafted over time and moments of panic may produce data points for future reformation, but the moment itself reveals everything up to that point. Future moments will reveal what was learned from prior moments.
No one becomes great on a whim, nor could they. Character is a matter of hard work and habit; more precisely the habit of working hard and doing the hard work of being habitual.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle
