Psalm 32
The blessed person is a forgiven person.
This runs contrary to the commonly held understanding that blessed people are
those who never sin. The general underestimation of sin and overestimation of
goodness lends itself to this understanding. But it is a wrong assessment of
our situation. Sin is more real and more deadly than most imagine, yet it is at
the same time not as irreversible as most would assume. We keep sin secret
either in order to maintain a reputation of righteousness or because we fear that
true forgiveness is beyond hope. But David affirms ferociously here that the
blessed man is a real, solid sinner… a sinner, however, who has been forgiven
by God. He no longer plays games in order to manipulate his brand. He is
confessional and the first to admit he was wrong, because his hope is no longer
in being thought of as right, but being known as a man who is wrong, but
forgiven for his wrongdoings.
