Exodus 12:4-7
…a lamb for a household… without blemish, a
male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats… kill their
lambs at twilight. 7 Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the
two doorposts and the lintel of the houses
Every house had to participate. No one was
excused. No soccer practice or football games. No vacation or family reunions. Every
household was obligated to procure a spotless, one year old male lamb, sheep or
goat, take your pick. Then as the last light of the day was tip-toeing into
darkness, the lambs were to be slain. The last color everyone who believed saw
that evening was red - deep, rich, thick red… everywhere: on your hands,
clothes, feet, floor, doors, etc… Imagine the smell of a hundred thousand
entrails and sticky, blood-covered hands in every yard where Yahweh was
believed. A night without equal.
