day no. 16,315: a little less fetched

In talking with my kids the other day, I made the joke that some tall tales could stand to be a little be shorter. The idea was that the tale is not made taller simply by adding chapters to it. Its tallness isn't best expressed in length, but in depth. A tall tale that was shorter in the sense of less fantastic, wouldn't be a tall tale at all; it would simply be an off-the-rack story. Tall tales need to search for special shops in order to find their clothing. A story that is far fetched can stand to be a a little less fetched at times. All that to say, too much fetch does not a better story maketh.

Oh, it's happening. Maybe a little less fetch than what some may have wanted, but more than enough to get things off the ground.

day no. 13,301: the preacher in process

The other morning, the big kids and I watched the video below (for about the 1,000th time)

   

I ADORE this video. 

Srrsly. 

You may be tempted to think that we've watched 1,000 times because kids love watching stuff over and over and in part, you'd be right. But I'm right there with them when it comes to this masterpiece. 

I love that Elijah sings opera at some points. 
I love the animation.
I love the storytelling. 
Love, love, love. 

Anywho... 

I have longed prayed that my son would be a pastor who faithfully preaches God's Word and that in my lifetime I would get to hear him preach the Good News of Jesus Christ empowered by God's Spirit. 

He's well on his way. 

He already thinks like a preacher apparently. 

After watching it this particular time, Atticus dropped a bombshell of awesomesauce: 

"The water did not put out the fire of God, the fire of God put out the water." 

So pastoral. 

I can hear that play on words preached even now. 

What a tiny stud.

day no. 12,764 continued... they shoot horses, don't they?

I was watching a video by R.C. Sproul called Nietzsche “The Consequence of Ideas” when he mentioned a movie called, "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"

I checked it out from the library and Paige and I watched it.

It was one of the most miserable, depressing, dark things I have seen in a while. The sheer despair of life under the sun without a hope beyond it was devastating and difficult to watch.

It is the same sentiment captured well by the new Dustin Kensrue song "It's Not Enough."

Life under the sun is full of heavy regret and unmet expectation.

If there was no Life outside and beyond the sun, it would be more merciful to put us down and out of our misery like they do a horse with a broken leg.

In a world without God's grace, even when you win, you lose.
