“When ministries go astray, it is very common for the problem to be located in one of three areas: glory, gold, and girls. And because sins are like grapes—they come in bunches—it is not unusual to find some ministries that shipwreck because of all three.” — Douglas Wilson, Mines of Difficulty
If someone is going to sell out, it is usually for status, stuff, or sex. A man will compromise his convictions in order to gain clout with the cool kids. Another man will make a case for immorality if it means more money can be found there. And yet another man will violate his vows in order to venture into a new bed. These are not mutually exclusive. They often complement each other. In some cases, a man assuages his guilt in one area, however, by becoming hyper-vigilant in another. So, he reassures himself through strict adherence to one particular moral that he is excused for his active rebellion to another.
