Genesis 39:2-3
The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a
successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 His master
saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to
succeed in his hands.
One might ask, "If the Lord was with
Joseph, why is Joseph enslaved in a foreign land by the betrayal of his own
brothers?" But such a view assumes a particular script off which a God
must work in order to be the Lord. The question assumes that the Lord's
presence or assistance must come to pass in particular ways like health, wealth
and prosperity. To be fair, a sign of God's hand on Joseph's life was his
prosperity in whatever circumstances his enemies placed him, but the cynic
would question God for allowing Joseph to be enslaved in the first place.
