Genesis 34:7
The sons of Jacob had come in from the
field as soon as they heard of it, and the men were indignant and very angry,
because he had done an outrageous thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's
daughter, for such a thing must not be done
Dinah deserved better and Shechem deserved
worse. The sons of Jacob could not make right the wrong done to their sister,
so they tried to give Shechem the wrong his deed demanded.
But even then, they lost out on blessing later because they retaliated. "No situation is so bad that you can't make it worse." Dinah deserved better, their retaliation did nothing for her, it guaranteed they were worse off in the end, and 'do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell" - the wickedness of the brothers in retaliating didn't really do anything extra to Shechem in the long run. God's vengeance isn't added to or enhanced by ours.
ReplyDeleteSuch a gross situation for all involved.
