21 To Shem also, the father of all the
children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 The sons
of Shem: Arpachshad. 24 Arpachshad fathered Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber.
25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days
the earth was divided, and his brother's name was Joktan.
Shem is the son through whom the family
tree leads to Jesus and one of his sons, who is pointed out on the front end,
was named Eber. He lived on an earth divided and he proclaimed that reality by
naming his son, Peleg. Jesus would later come through this family and proclaim,
"Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but
rather division." (Luke 12:51) The end of chapter 11 will highlight this particular
family as from them will be born, Abraham. As meaningless as these genealogies
can appear to be, their meticulous nature reveals to us the direct path from
the promise of God to Adam to the fulfillment of it in Jesus.
