St Valentine was a Christian who performed Christian marriage ceremonies during a time of extreme persecution towards Christians. The story has it that upon being caught in assisting Christians, St. Valentine attempted to convert the Emperor to no avail. St. Valentine was martyred for the fruit of his faith in Jesus Christ: assisting brothers and sisters who were seeking to honor the LORD.

Not that there is anything wrong with those (sans the fat babies with weapons). Just not, perhaps the point of the holiday.
Furthermore, the day celebrates romantic love in the form of Christian marriage and convenantal faithfulness to our spouse which is a far cry from the excuse for fornication the day represents in American culture.
