day no. 17,455: amending the constitution of the United States of Christendom

"We, the people of the United States, humbly acknowledging Almighty God as the source of all authority and power in civil government, the Lord Jesus Christ as the Ruler among the nations, His revealed will as the supreme law of the land, in order to constitute a Christian government, and in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the inalienable rights and the blessings of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to ourselves and our posterity, and all the people, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." — proposed amendment to the United States Constitution (1864)

Once upon a time, the PCA proposed amending the preamble of the United States Constitution to include the wording above. This was a concerted effort to clear up any vague notion of our nation being founded upon the principles and practices of Christendom by stating emphatically and unequivocally that the Gospel of God and His Son, Jesus Christ, are the cornerstones of the country we call home.

This was placed on the desk of Abraham Lincoln who responded by saying he needed time to consider what it said and what it's implications its adoption would bring about. Whatever was going through his head regarding this proposal, something else soon went through his head which prevented him from pondering it any longer. And the proposal died along with him in the confusion and turmoil that followed as the republic lost its head after losing its head of state.

The adoption of this amendment would have made us the United States of Christendom.
