"You cannot grow a beard in a moment of passion" - G.K. Chesterton
This is one of my favorite things anyone has ever said. Partly because I love Chesterton (or Chesty as he is affectionately referred to round my home) and partly because it is about beards and MOSTLY because it is Chesterton speaking favorably of beards.
A good beard requires commitment and you cannot just drum one up in a moment. If you want one, you must commit to having one. You cannot suddenly decide to have one. It must be deliberate. It cannot sneak up on you. It happens slowly and surely.
“Growing a beard is a habit most natural, Scriptural, manly and beneficial.” - C.H. Spurgeon
Beards are grown. They are not produced in a moment of fleeting passion or secured by petulant impatience. They are a product of perseverent habit.
