Romans 10:2-4
2 I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. 3 For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. 4 For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.
Isn't that just like us?
We desperately desire to be rewarded rather than given a hand out.
We want to have earned it.
We want good things for ourselves, but more importantly, we want to be rewarded for having been good (or at least good enough).
We reject God's gift because we don't want it that way.
We want Heaven at the end of a blue ribbon for having crossed the finished line fastest.
We'd prefer to be rewarded for our performance rather than be granted gifts we didn't deserve.
