Both are nearing milestones. My father is about to crest his four score and ten (90) and their marriage is about to reach its two score and ten (50). Both are significant.
Psalm 90 lauds the longevity of those who reach 70 and the few who reach 80. My father has already eclipsed those both and is approaching the nearly unthinkable 90.
And 50 is half of a century. That is a significant measure of time. A centurion was entrusted with one hundred men and he was expected to keep them in line and to put them to good use. In a similar way, the man who has been entrusted with 50 years is expected to produce something of value with them. To be married 50 years is to have stayed alive that long and to have kept someone else alive that long as well. It is not mere survival, it is provision. It is not just the ability to endure trouble, it is the responsibility to endure someone else's.
All that to say, congratulations mom and dad. God has been kind to you both. May you finish well and pick up steam as you see the end of the race approaching instead of fading on the final stretch.
