day no. 14,255: soap opera grade amnesia

Genesis 40:23
Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

The cupbearer's good fortune produced amnesia. We see here the difficulty of mourning with those who mourn when one is, in fact, rejoicing.

  1. Ugh, this part of the story always makes me so mad! Especially since Joseph was the absolute opposite. Even after he'd been in prison for so long, he was still looking around for ways to notice the needs of others. He noticed the cupbearer and baker, and saw their faces were downcast after their dreams. He asked them why they were sad. As though he didn't have reason to be sad himself!! But even in his own distress, he cared for the distress of others. And then those others go off and totally forget about him!

But you're right - we are just like the cupbearer. It is so easy to forget the trials of others when we ourselves have it pretty good in life. I'm thinking of a couple specific examples even in my own heart right now. Thanks for the reminder to be on the lookout for ways to remember others, even when life is pretty calm on my end.
